Boys Whipped For Possessing Knives

The two were arraigned after Special Support Group (SSG) constables arrested them idling in Maruapula on March 16, 2014. The court learnt that the officers searched the duo and discovered the three knives. Tau and his friend Dongwana were arrested after they failed to account for  the knives.

In mitigation, the duo pleaded that the court should be lenient as they are taking care of their parents and could not afford to lose their jobs. Monametsi acknowledged their request and exercised mercy. He told them that he could have sentenced them to eight months imprisonment and eight strokes. He gave the duo a suspended three months imprisonment as long as he does not commit the same crime for a year. He told them to appeal within 30 days if they are not happy with the sentence.
