Rugby minnows out to cause havoc

BU Ryders kicked off the league by brushing aside Mochudi Rugby Club 37-0. Ryders were promoted to the A Division after winning the B Division last year. Club chairperson, Simon Kanaimba told Mmegi Sport that playing in the top league excites them.

He said his team worked hard to gain promotion. Kanaimba said beating a team that was already in the league was an achievement and the win motivated the players.

He explained that they are used to playing 10-a-side rugby in the lower league but now they are adjusting to playing 15-a-side. He said the transition has been quick as they started training in January.

“We did not only win the league last season, but other tournaments too. We are looking forward to an exciting season. A lot of people expected us to lose against Mochudi but we proved them wrong,” he said.

Kanaimba said BU Ryders is a growing club with huge potential. He stated that three of their players were called for national team trials last year and were picked for the national sevens.

He said their aim is to have more players in the national side.

BU Ryders are coached by Seabe Gaboratanelwe. They play Francistown Tuskers on Saturday afternoon. Kanaimba promised that his team will give the seasoned Tuskers a tough time.

The rookies will miss Allen Lesolo who sustained an injury on national duty. Kanaimba explained that they are now forced to play Biki Mawela as a fly back instead of his usual position of full back.

However, BU Ryders’ push to the top is hampered by lack of sponsorship, a problem faced by most clubs in the league.

Kanaimba said they are forced to use the same kit they had while in the B Division.

Botho University has tried to come to the team’s rescue but what it gives is not enough. Kanaimba called upon potential sponsors to assist them.

He said support from the public is necessary in the development of rugby and if people attend matches in large numbers, sponsors take notice and come on board.

In other rugby matches, EMG Gunners hosts UB Rhinos in Selebi-Phikwe while Gaborone Hogs lock horns against Mochudi at Wharic Park. Kick off is 3:00 pm.
