US citizen in court for forgery

John Edward Carroll is alleged to have uttered a false Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, thereby defrauding the ministry a total P228,980.10 in salaries.

He faces another charge of falsely informing one Tshireletso Mandu Chenga, a human resource manager at the ministry that his wife Sarona Matshidiso Sebina and daughter Samiera Karabo Carroll were in the US and needed to join him in Botswana.

Chenga then issued an air transport warrant for the two. Caroll was arrested by CID officers on Sunday at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport upon his return from the US.

The prosecutor, Goabaone Motlhagodi told the court yesterday that he had agreed with the defence on bail. He said the accused must surrender all his travelling documents to Mogoditshane Police Station, where he is to report twice a week. He should deposit a cash bail of P20,000 and provide two sureties who will each pay P60,000. “Investigations into the matter are not yet complete but we are hoping to finish them in two weeks time when we will be in a position to set a trial date,” said Motlhagodi.

The magistrate granted bail and said the two sureties must be Batswana or residents of Botswana. The accused will appear for mention on April 16.
