Newzy - a Lil Wayne wanna be?

Few will like to admit it, but it was pioneers Third Mind who laid the foundation of this dream for those who would later follow in their footsteps.

It is also worth mentioning that the success of South Africa’s HHP with a strong connection to Botswana that also played a role in luring more and more budding rappers to follow the trend.

But while many young and upcoming rappers draw a lot of inspiration from established locals, there are some who still insanely idolise international starts like Lil Wayne.

Before he has even released his first album young rapper Thabiso ‘Newzy’ Segokgo already pictures himself sharing the stage with his idol, Wayne.

In fact, the young secondary school student is so crazy about the tattooed star that he has called one of the songs in his soon to be released mix-tape Carter, in honour of Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr aka Lil Wayne.

“I have respect for many local hip hop musicians, but to be honest I have been inspired a lot by Lil Wayne, the way I appear on stage, the way I compose my lyrics is in similar pattern with him. In that song I call myself Carter,” Newzy told Showbiz.

The young man from Kopong was introduced to rap through writing poetry.  Only then did he discover his lyrical brilliance.

“I adopted the same rhymes from poetry in my music if you check the flow properly,” he said. While it is good to have an a star to iconise the young man could soon find himself consumed in the ‘Lil Wayne dream land’ and perhaps lack originality.

“I just want to do well and even attract international attention at a later stage.  Maybe even get an invitation to perform at one of Lil’s shows if he visits Africa.  I believe I can improve to become good performer modelling my game around him.  It is not an obsession I am a flexible and I can also do Motswako,” he said.
