ABM students deem course useless

Speaking to Mmegi, one of the students’ representatives Khumo Lekgetho who is currently studying for a Diploma in Tourism Management said they started getting suspicious  when the letter of sponsorship from the MoESD was not the same for all students.

“We are doing the same course, and we started it together, but the amount the MoESD loaned to each student is different. The other thing that is suspicious is that our dates of completion are different though it’s the same course,” she said.  The students say they took the matter to the school officials and their Student Representative Council (SRC) who have all turned a blind eye on the issue.  The students took the matter to the Tertiary Education Council (TEC) and were told that the course that was offered to them was not accredited and that it expired in May 2012.

“That is when we were now told that ABM is offering a home grown course, even our SRC body is not doing anything about our issue, they have not come back to us to explain what we should expect,” she said. Lekgetho added that a graduate from the same course was rejected when she applied for the job as she was told her certificate looked like an invitation card.  “Even the lecturers for this course are unprofessional, they have not even given us course outlines, so we do not know what our course entails,” she said.  President of the SRC Toy Koetsiwe confirmed that the students raised the issue with the SRC, which was working on resolving it.

An official responsible for academic matter could not comment or even allow for his identification. “this matter is too big for me so you should talk to the director”.   Our efforts to get a comment from the Director Daisy Molefhi could not materialise as she was said to be too busy to attend to our call.  The students say they have been to the Department of Tertiary Education Financing (DTEF), where they were told that their issue would be dealt with.  “Even now, they have not got back to us,” said Lekgetho.
