 Over P7m unexplained

A total of 139 poverty eradication projects in Gaborone South Constituency has cost the government P7,090,000 despite each constituency being allocated only P2 million per year. This was revealed by Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration Mokgweetsi Masisi who said that only Gaborone City Council could explain why over P7 million was spent on 139 projects where as each constituency is allocated only P2 million per financial year. He further explained that it meant that they had exceeded a three-year budget allocation for the constituency.

Masisi said that currently there are 1,966 people who have applied for enrolment in the poverty eradication programme in the constituency and are awaiting assessment. Only 139 have benefited so far. He said that the roll out of the programme is not satisfactory adding that efforts are however being made to fast track the assessment process and roll out.

Masisi was responding to Member of Parliament for Gaborone South Kagiso Molatlhegi who had asked the minister to state the number of applicants for the poverty eradication programme awaiting assistance in the constituency and whether he was happy with the roll out of the programme.
