BDF IX firmly in control

BDF will be hoping to continue with their fine form when they take on seventh placed UB Giants in their next assignment.

The students, who are in third place, have played some good softball this season under Misael Thompson and are not far off from attaining a top four finish.

They could hand the log leaders their third defeat of the season. The soldiers have lost twice this season and amassed 30 points from their 17 games.

Some of their remaining fixtures include Police IX, an easy tie against struggling Gideon Warriors, who have only won two games, Blue Angels and Vikings. Their strongest challengers Wells are six points adrift albeit with two games in hand and a loss against Giants would allow Wells to draw level.

UB Giants have played 17 games and collected 24 points out of a possible 34.

Wells seemingly have some tough encounters with games against Panthers, Stingers, fourth placed Dinare, Police, BMC and Bears.

Dinare will be out to maintain fourth place and make the national championships.

They have won 10 of their 17 games this season. Their biggest threat as they seek a championships’ berth is Vikings, who are just two points behind them, having played a game less than their rivals.

Two of the teams they play in the next three games - Gideon Warriors and BMC - are in the bottom three. They will also face Police as they look to move up the log standings.

Police and Panthers are both on 16 points. Police played 17, panthers 15 and stand an outside chance of storming into the top four. Dinare’s influential captain Bokamoso Diseko believes their desire to play in the championship will spur them on.

“We are actually eyeing top eight and the guys are all motivated to achieve that goal. They are all getting involved in the game. Our plan is always to score a lot of runs in every game we play so we can give youngsters a run to broaden our selection base,” Diseko told Monitor Sport.

In the ladies’ log standings, Wells and Police are both on 18 points although Wells have a game in hand.

Just below the two is BDF IX with 16 points, two less than Wells and Police.

Teams are now fighting for top four places in the title race. The top four teams in the southern region proceed to meet the top four in the north in the national championships.

Last season, Scramblers of Francistown beat weary BDF IX 6-2 in the men’s final while Bears won the ladies’ title after beating Police.
