Police round up street children in Gantsi

Gantsi Police Station commander, Superintendent Chris Molobe told Mmegi this week that the increasing number of street children in the district is worrying. He said the children are a menace to customers at  shopping malls.

He said the operation has netted nine children so far. Four of the children are in primary school while the rest are out-of-school. Molobe said so far they have located one parent who stays with three of the children.

She claimed that she did not know that the children have not been attending classes because she is engaged the whole day working in Ipelegeng.

Molobe said the police and other stakeholders should work together to deal with the problem of street children in the district.

He said they are still trying to identify and talk to parents of the other children. If the situation does not change, the parents will face the wrath of the law and answer charges of child negligence.

Molobe said some of the children claimed that their uniforms had not been washed when they were asked why they were not in school.

He advised parents to make sure that every morning their children are bathed, dressed and fed before they leave for school. He said they should make sure that the children are back from school in time and play around their homes.
