BDP suspends Molao's challenger

“Yes we have suspended Onkabetse Daniel from the party last week for offences he has committed,” said the BDP executive secretary Sechele Sechele on Wednesday.

But instead of advancing reasons for the decision, Sechele insisted Mmegi talk to Daniel as,  “He might be the one who told you about the suspension. Phone him so that he can explain in detail what are the reasons. I am not in the office and do not have details of the case with me now.”

The BDP wrote Daniel a letter dated February 27 2014 and signed by party president, Ian Khama, which accused Daniel of having “engaged in acts of serious misconduct that brought the party into disrepute. “In exercise of the powers conferred upon me as the party president in terms of Article 43.1.6 of the party constitution, I hereby suspend you as a member of the party with immediate effect pending disciplinary action for a period of 60 days.

“During this period you are not supposed to engage yourself in any party activity at any level until after conclusion of this matter.

In the controversy-ridden Bulela Ditswe elections last November, Daniel garnered 1,520 votes to Molao’s 3,244. Daniel immediately challenged the results, insisting that he had been cheated.

About a month after the primary elections, there were reports that Daniel was campaigning as an independent candidate, which he dismissed as untrue.

“It is still early for me to decide to be an independent candidate, “ said Daniel then.

Just recently Daniel had been rumoured to be campaigning in the constituency by printing and distributing calendars with his photo among the constituents. But Daniel insisted that he knew nothing of the calendars. Regarding the suspension, Mmegi’s calls to Daniel went unanswered.
