BFA president, Tebogo Sebogo said that although loose ends are being tied, they will host the regional tournament instead of Zimbabwe. “We intended to host the tournament next year, but we have been requested to come in this year. We have engaged relevant authorities over the matter. The government is keen to assist. We still need to conclude a few commitments first,” Sebego said.

He said the BFA felt it would be beneficial to host the regional competition in line with the aspirations of the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC).

It is not yet confirmed where the matches will be played, but the National Stadium and the New Lobatse Sports Complex are likely venues. COSAFA chief executive officer, Sue Destombes told Mmegi Sport Zimbabwe had pulled out and the regional soccer body has approached Botswana to step in. She said they are discussing with sponsors to finance this year’s tournament and future editions.

SAB Miller, through the Castle Lager brand has been the main sponsor over the years although the competition has been irregular in recent times. Zambia hosted and won the last edition by beating Zimbabwe in the final while the Zebras were largely unconvincing bowing out in the group stages after three draws.

Hosting the COSAFA Challenge Cup will mean Botswana will organise two high profile competitions this year. In May, 54 nations come to Gaborone to compete in the Africa Youth Games.
