Customary court postpones serial offenders case

The offender, Golebaone Selogile appeared before the customary court after the Central Police Station arrested him for idling on March 6, 2014.  The officers while patrolling Notwane Grounds arrested him after he failed to give them answers as to why he was loitering at night. He pleaded guilty to the charge.

According to constable Themba Jiya, Selogile told them that he was looking for his lost cellphone, but later got suspicious of him after he changed his initial statement.  He changed his statement telling the police that he was looking for money that may have been lost by football fans at a recent game.  The court was told that Selogile said after the Zebras and South Sudan game he decided to go to the grounds to look for lost money, as he was broke.

'The police decided to arrest the accused.  They became suspicious of him as he kept changing his statement.  He told the police that he was looking for some money that may have been lost by supporters.  Upon hearing the accused changing his statement, we charged him with idling as he did not give us concrete reasons,' Jiya said.

Jiya pleaded with the court to postpone the judgment, as Selogile was no stranger to breaking the law as he already had a criminal record.  The accused had been convicted of possessing dagga, trespassing, common nuisance and has been in possession of stolen property.  He was convicted of these crimes separately between 2012 and 2013.

Monametsi slapped him with rogues and vagabonds of the Penal Code, a charge for idling at night.  He postponed the case to tomorrow when the police will present Selogile’s Previous Conviction documents as evidence.
