Botswana enjoys favourable judiciary rankings

 

Of Botswana the report notes that: 'the country continues to enjoy effective systems of checks and balances, including a fairly independent judiciary and a free press. Corruption remains minimal and all branches of government operate effectively.'

Based on over 100,000 household and 2,400 expert surveys worldwide, the WJP Rule of Law Index is the most comprehensive index of its kind and the only one to rely solely on primary data.

It measures how the rule of law is experienced in everyday life around the globe, offering a detailed, multidimensional view of the extent to which countries adhere to the rule of law in practice.

Over 100,000 citizens and experts around the world, including over 1,000 within Botswana, were interviewed in the process of gathering data for the Index, which assesses adherence to the rule of law is assessed using 47 indicators organised around eight themes: constraints on government powers, absence of corruption, open government, fundamental rights, order and security, regulatory enforcement, civil justice, and criminal justice. More than 500 variables were in the process computed to produce the indicators for each country.

Index findings have been further referenced by heads of state, chief justices, business leaders, public officials, and the press.

In addition to country scores and rankings, the Index also includes key global findings as well as an analysis of regional strengths, rule of law challenges, best and worst performers, and trends to watch.
