BOFEPUSU secretary general, Tobokani Rari said this is a matter of public interest and hoped the commissioner will find a suitable date this week.

“Our view is that an independent mediator will be appointed,” said Rari.

He added that in the unfortunate case that mediation fails, they would have two options. “It is either we go for arbitration or industrial action. But it should not look as if we are pre-empting the mediation process”.

Last week BOFEPUSU and the employer issued a joint press statement on the public service salary negotiations. According to the statement, the Public Service Bargaining Council (PSBC) met on February 25 and March 5, 2014 to continue with the 2013/2014 public service salary negotiations following a 10-day cooling off period.

“Having failed to reach an agreement, the employer party declared a deadlock on the 2013/2014 public service salary negotiations. Consequently, any of the parties may refer the dispute to the Commissioner of Labour in accordance with the Trade Disputes Act,” reads the statement.
