Govt raves Up the creative arts

According to the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Youth Sport and Culture Ruth Maphorisa, the decision to support fashion designers was first taken when the ministry became part of the Colour in the Desert fashion event two years ago.

Last year the President Awards for the first time put together a fashion night although it was not successful. Maphorisa is however optimistic that this time around, designers across the country will heed the call and come forward to expose their talent and products.

Maphorisa said they were working on a program to have the excelling designers possibly taken for further studies, just as the ministry has done with performing artists who participate and win in the My Star television show.

In the recent past, the top three My Star performers are, through the Ministry of Education, sponsored to pursue music related courses outside Botswana.

Also, said Maphorisa, there was a plan to take advantage of the Thapong Artist of the Year award to expose as many young people to the visual arts and possibly take the best performers for further education.
