A reunion for social mores

The fourth Ghetto Urban Designs Annual Cultural and Family Reunion scheduled for March 30 to 31 at Kennedy Farm will feature a workshop and exhibition.  Themed My Family Towards Nation Building, the event will also have a cultural festival, and a dinner whereby participants will be awarded certificates of participation.

Ghetto Urban Designs Managing Director, Thato Sebati, said the main purpose of the event is to celebrate the importance of culture and family.  Sebati explained that the days’ activities would include a workshop, where issues of health, youth and elections, vision 2016, education, role of the church in the community, price fixing and the role of traditional leadership in the society will be discussed.

He said the event is an effort to equip the society with knowledge, meant to improve lives, both economically and personally, while anchoring on family and culture.

He explained that a number of individuals have small businesses, but lack knowledge on issues such as price fixing.  He added that it is important for those people running small business to be knowledgeable on how to price their goods.  He said artists and individuals who are in the craft business would benefit from the workshops, which hopefully will assist them in growing their businesses.

He emphasised that exhibitors would showcase their products and services, giving them more time to promote their businesses.

“The exhibition, will include service providers for example from health and education, as well as craft, including baskets, jewellery, accessories, and artworks by visual artists,” Sebati said.

Sebati said the reunion would also include a cultural festival on Friday night, which will feature a variety of performers, including traditional groups/individuals, traditional instruments players, and poets.

“The festival is meant to promote Mmino wa Setswana and as such will feature segaba, segankure and other traditional instruments players. The festival will also feature, musicians in the business,” he said, adding that their focus would be on cultural music, groups and dancers.

Sebati said he is confident that people will attend the event.

“There will be entertainment yes, but the it will be leaning towards, teaching the youth about our culture, and those who attend will also have the opportunity to be informed on education, health, and the importance of family among others,” he said.

He said as a build-up to the event, his company has organised a sponsored walk, which will take place on March 15 from Serowe old mall to Central Transport Organisation.

Ghetto Urban Designs has organised the event in collaboration with the Department of Gender Affairs, and Department of Arts and Culture.
