Illegal drag racing lands two in hospital

“The driver lost control of his vehicle while he was spinning and ran over a couple of bystanders who were watching,” a source who preferred to remain anonymous told Mmegi.

The source added that after the accident, the driver sped-off from the scene. “Only two people were injured.

They had dislocated limbs and they were taken to the hospital.”

The source stated that last week, the same driver hit another car while doing stunts at the cemetery.

The police have said they are not aware of the two incidents. The police director of traffic, Katlholo Gabriel Mosimanegape said he does not know of the illegal drag races and spins taking place at the Broadhurst cemetery.

He said a while ago, the police stopped illegal drag racers from using the cemetery and identified certain individuals responsible for staging the events.

Mosimanegape stated that the police have been doing regular checks at the cemetery though  they have been tipped that drag racing takes place on Sundays. He said illegal racing and spinning is against the law because it is a danger to the public.

“The law does not accommodate spins. Racing has to be authorised and the place has to be approved if it is free from public harm by the road authorities and the Commission of Police,” he explained.

Mosimanegape said that action will be taken against those who engage in illegal drag races and spins.
