According to one eyewitness, the meeting was abandoned in the morning after some participants started vomiting and others had complained of stomachache leading to regular toilets visits.

Some are said to have collapsed. On realising the seriousness of the situation, the ministry and hotel management called paramedics who arrived with three ambulances that ferried the sick to the nearby health facilities.

According to one of the victims, attendants fell ill after eating food on Monday.

They suspected that they were not provided with fresh meals. She said the food had a bad smell and taste. She said that most of the people who fell sick had eaten the salads and vegetables. “We suspect that they were provided with leftovers from the previous meals. The meals were preheated instead of being freshly cooked,” said the source.

Mmegi learnt that the MoH hosted a workshop that commenced on February 17 and was attended by employees from different clinics around the country. The meeting was supposed to end on February 28.

MoH statistician Keneetswe Setlhare, who was present at the workshop, refused to address Mmegi questions. Setlhare said that she did not find it fit to talk to the media about the incident.

She referred Mmegi to the hotel management, but attempts to talk to the hotel’s general manager proved futile. His personal assistant insisted he was in a meeting and had not returned our calls at press time.
