BCP to decide primaries for F/town West

But lobbying has intensified to the point that some members feel that the party should cancel parliamentary primary elections in that constituency.

Recently, the BCP made history when it sent the first female opposition legislator, Dr Habaudi Hobona to Parliament. Some BCP members in that constituency fear that if Francistown West constituency goes for primaries it is likely to affect its performance during general elections.

“The BCP should do all it can to retain the seat. That should convince interested parties of the importance of not holding elections in that constituency,” said a source. If the primaries go ahead Hobona will battle it out with Itekeng ward councillor Professor Lazarus Tlou and Baatlhodi Monyatsi, who both lost against her  during the primaries last year.

BCP electoral chairperson Stephen Makhura said the central committee will meet on March 8 to decide on primary elections for Francistown constituencies. “We have not yet taken a decision on the issue of Francistown West going for parliamentary primary elections. The central committee will decide whether primary elections should be held or not,” he said.
