Cricket season kicks off in March

BCA fixtures and publicity secretary Sumod Damodar said even though the season was yet to kick off a number of programmes aimed at driving the game forward are in progress.

The association has been conducting orientation courses around the country especially in schools in a bid to raise awareness.

“We have been going around the country conducting courses introducing the game in schools and to individuals,” Damodar said.

He said a sizeable number of people had acquired skills and knowledge of the game.

“With the skills and knowledge that individuals have acquired, we now have a wide variety when it comes to the selection of players,” Damodar said.

He added that they had been working with players from various age groups.

BCA has conducted the courses in towns such as Francistown, Selibe-Phikwe and Maun. He also stated that orientation courses focused mainly on teaching the basics of the game, administering and coaching. This week BCA is taking the orientation course to Lobatse.

Recently the BCA sent two girls to South Africa to attend a cricket programme.

“The girls have been attending a cricket programme in South Africa and are coming back today (yesterday),” said Damodar.

“We are also in the process of preparing for the ICC Africa regional tournament, which will be held early next year.”
