Police shot and killed suspect

According to a statement from the Botswana Police Service 'a suspect who was arrested and detained for an armed robbery that took place at a filling station at Commerce Park was shot dead after he and four others broke the holding cell door and escaped from Naledi Police Station in the early hours of Tuesday'.

It is understood the four suspected robbers were detained in a cell where they found two others already there. It was from this six that five, including the deceased attempted to escape. The other four are still at large. The statement adds that when confronted by police officers the deceased charged and tore one of the officer’s shirts with a sharp object and it was then that he was fatally wounded.

'The deceased was out on bail for two murder and three robbery cases when he was arrested and detained for allegedly being involved in the Commerce Park Filling Station robbery', according to a statement by the police.

The four robbery suspects were to appear before Extension Two Magistrate Court for mention yesterday morning but their case was not registered due to the escape.

This is the second shooting in which a suspect on the run has been killed in a space of three days after a 32 year-old prison escapee who was on the run since February 5, 2014, was fatally shot after resisting arrest and charging at the police with a knife at Salajwe Village on February 14.
