Francistown council abattoir leased

The tender to lease the abattoir was restricted to Botswana companies. The council confirmed the choice of the company through a notice published on the FCC notice board last week Friday.

The FCC announced early last month that it was about to appoint a company to lease the dilapidated multi species abattoir and two companies had reportedly applied.

The exact date in which the company will begin renovations and leasing of the facility is not stated in the notice.

Even the city mayor, James Kgalajwe was not ready to reveal the exact date the deal will commence.

“Yes we have reached an agreement with Judex to lease the facility but I do not have much detail on the deal now. I should be having them in the coming days,” he said.

The Francistown abattoir was closed in 2011 as the council could not renovate it. It did not meet required specifications by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) as it was dilapidated.

Since the abattoir closed, farmers in the city and its surroundings slaughtered their cattle at the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) facility but decried its costs.

At press time, there was no readily available comment from Judex about its profile and details of the deal with the FCC.
