SVM happy with support for Games

The SVM was recently in Francistown and over 100 volunteers came for identification screening and registration, according the SVM spokesperson Thabo Osekeng in a interview recently.

'The numbers of people who have registered to volunteer to assist with various skills at the games so far exceeds the 2, 000 we have targeted. The turnout of volunteers is very impressive. “After the final registration and screening to verify the identities of people who have applied we will embark on a vetting process to determine who will make the final 2, 000 volunteers based on the type of skills we need for the games,' Osekeng said.

He said: 'Those who will not be part of the 2, 000 individuals who will be vetted to assist at the games, but have initially applied to volunteer at the games will be added on the database of the SVM so that when we need them in future we can contact them easily.'  There has been skepticism that volunteers in the critical sectors such as health may not be available to volunteer at the games. However, Osekeng said talks had been held with various health institutions to assist with personnel such as doctors in the event that there will be few volunteers with skills in the health category.

The volunteers are in the categories such as security, health, media and others. Over 21 sports codes are expected to take part at the games billed May 22 to 31 this year. The SVM is supported by the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) to source volunteers for the games.
