U lost 1-0 to Supersport United in the second leg of the competition on Saturday at the National Stadium. They go out 3-0 on aggregate after a 2-0 hammering by Supersport in the first leg in Pretoria the previous weekend. Senegalese striker, Mame Niang who damaged GU with two strikes in the first leg was it again on Saturday when he scored the only goal of the match.

Having failed to score an away goal the previous weekend, GU made some changes to their starting line up. Moemedi Moatlhaping who has been in the news lately after being put on the transfer list, returned to the team and played just behind target man, Tebogo Sembowa. Moatlhaping had a good game, linking up well with other teammates. GU dropped Ronald Chikomo to the bench as well as defender, Gaopatwe Seosenyeng. Utility player, Tebogo Sosome was pushed back to central defence and assigned to mark Niang.

He did well for the better part of the match until a mistake by goalkeeper, Noah Maposa allowed the lanky Senegalese to pounce before half-time. With playmaker, Jackie Mothatego on the bench, Kabo Rasuping did a fantastic job in the middle and dished out a man of the match performance, giving GU technical team a selection headache ahead of the crucial Wednesday match against rivals-Township Rollers in the semis of the Mascom Top Eight tournament. The Reds trail 2-1 from the first leg.

Niang’s goal came at a time when GU were trying to press Supersport in their own half. However, despite numerous attempts to go forward, they could not find the target. A ball was played into GU’s box and Maposa failed to communicate with his defence and came out.

He could not handle the ball and Niang tapped in, putting the game beyond GU’s reach. Supersport nearly doubled the lead after the halftime break when Bennett Chenene beat Maposa with a low shot. But Sosome found himself in the right position at the right time, clearing the ball off the line.

Bright made two substitutions, introducing Mothatego and Chikomo for Kgololo Kgogobi and Sembowa respectively. However, Supersport with relatively more experienced players than GU, managed to absorb pressure and advanced to the next round of the competition. GU now prepare for the derby against Rollers on Wednesday.
