Date set for Lady Khama marathon

At the launch of the event yesterday, organisers said the main attraction will be the 21.1kilometre race.

Other races are a 10 kilometres run, a five kilometre fun walk/run and a junior rush. Registration is expected to take place on February 22 and March 1. Registration fee is P100 per person for the main race and P80 for the 10 kilometre run. The five kilometre event will be purely donation based. Participants can give items like toys, tinned food or clothes.

The marathon is expected to raise around P800,000. The inaugural event last year attracted just under 200 participants including children over the age of 16. It raised P620,000 from registration fees, donations and sponsorships.

LKCT chairperson, Dale Ter Haar said the spirit of giving, with a special focus on vulnerable women and children, is at the  heart of the organisation’s fund raising activities.    He said the trust has worked tirelessly from its inauguration in 2002 to have a strong impact in communities across the country.  “There are a number of critical stakeholders that play a role in helping us achieve this. The list includes the deserving charitable organisations and their staff who choose to devote themselves to help others, the donors who provide the funds and help in kind, the volunteers who assist at our fund raising events and of course the list of growing supporters thatattend all our events,” he explained.

He said there will be a number of stalls to cater for the runners and spectators. There will be a cloakroom, LKCT information and donation stall, a children’s interactive waiting area with child-minders, media area, massage tent, and a food and drinks stall. President Ian Khama is expected to attend the event.  “We hope to see many of the Gaborone community taking the time to come and support the 2014 edition of this event, through participation in the races,  volunteering, donations or just cheering the runners,” Ter Haar said. The trust expects to get a total of P2.5 million from all its fundraising activities this year.
