Dikgatlhong water to reach Gaborone in 2016

Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) communications manager, Matida Mmipi said that construction of pipelines from the dam to the southern part of the country will reach Moralane, 75km from the source, in May.

The second phase of construction will be a 78-kilometre pipeline from Moralane to Palapye. It is expected to be complete in December this year.

Mmipi said construction of the pipe from Palapye to Gaborone is planned to be complete in 2016, even though nothing has been put in place as yet. She could not immediately say how the overflowing dam would provide water. She said they still have to run models to determine its performance. “It depends on how much you get from the dam on a daily basis and evaporation rates as well. There are a number of things that you should consider and we are still to work on it,” she said.

However, the corporation is delighted that the dam has filled up immediately after completion, three years ahead of schedule. The dam was predicted to fill up after two to three years of good rains.

Currently, Letsibogo, Shashe, and Ntimbale dams are overflowing while Lotsane is almost full at 99 percent. Nnywane is at 75 percent while Gaborone Dam is at 13.4 percent, Molatedi at 20 percent and Bokaa at 38 percent.
