Netball shelved to make way for Youth Games

'The country will be hosting over 54 countries which will be participating in different sports code, netball included,' explained Kelebogile Maplanka,'BONA’s publicity secretary this week

Maplanka dismissed suggestions that the league was postponed because BONA was finding it hard to seal a deal with a sponsor.

'People are entitled to their different perceptions,' said Maplanka.

A four-year sponsorship deal between BONA and Spar ended last December.

Maplanka said the government and the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) had pleaded with all associations to support the youth games and BONA had heeded the call.

'It does not make sense to start the league in May and break for the Youth Games. We want to give the Games undivided attention, she said.

Furthermore, the BONA courts are currently under refurbishment and starting the league at this juncture could result in shortage of venues.

Meanwhile, Maplanka said negotiations between BONA and a number of potential sponsors were ongoing.
