Shopper Narrates
Robbery Horror At Choppies
I
went to Choppies, Middlestar at 7.35pm on Thursday. I was in there for about 10 minutes, busy chatting away on the phone. I got to the till and was putting things down for the lady to ring them, when I saw people run into the store falling over themselves. Someone asked if there was a mad man frightening people. I continued with my conversation and that's when I heard, 'on the floor now. Face down, down down.'
I reacted slowly and looked towards my left and saw a young man with a handkerchief across his face, wearing a hoodie. I just stood there and almost said,  'ntseehe lo Irang!' I then saw three young slender men dash past us to the inner tills which were open, I then hit the floor.
I kept my head down and after about five minutes or so, there was absolute silence.
The lads had run away with three till drawers.
I heard from those who were outside that there was a getaway car, where the lads threw the register in and made off on foot. Their voices were young and Batswana... scary I tell you.
My concern is that these stores need to train their staff and security on what to do when they are attacked.
The doors were left wide open, and one of the customers who reacted late like me said the lads did not seem to carry any weapons. I realised how people can get killed during such incidences.
For example, I was on the phone and reacted slowly...when they shouted to a few of us who were still standing to get down that's when I cut off my conversation and dropped to the floor! My friend called me back. It was deathly quiet safe for the robber shouting faces down and my ringing phone.
One lady says she just froze and looked at the chap, who motioned for her to get down. The lady at whose till I was standing, quickly closed her till and dropped down. This was smart as she locked it in the process. The boys did not even bother to come to us.
After the SSG had arrived on the scene, I went straight to them and said shoot them!
They laughed! It broke the tension. At some point, a police helicopter was flying around, and the boys in blue were inside the store taking statements.
