his year has proved that Botswana has a great deal of talent. This has been proven by a number of youngsters who battled it out for a space the countries popular talent search show My Star top 20 on Saturday at Gaborone Technical College (GTC).
The organisers of the show decided to spread their wings and accommodate many talented young people this year. What was supposed to be the top 20 selections doubled up and became top 40.
About 200 talented contenders showed up for top 20 auditions but only the lucky ones were chosen. The top 40 will battle up for the grand price, which includes the record deal and a scholarship that gives the winner a chance to learn more about music in order to develop their talent.
Throughout the auditions, multitudes of youngsters made the job tough for the judges as each one of them showcased their unique talent as they unleashed their best to impress.
Each performer left a memorable impression to both audience and judges with their beautiful voices and performances.
As fashion statement is the 'in' thing nowadays, the contenders made sure that they branded themselves with their unique fashionable attires and hair styles while a few decided to be simple but pretty.
It is the first time in My Star history to reach young people from different rural areas. Even thought the hall was filled with excent and eager to hear the results, it was a heart breaking night for those who were not able to make it to the next round while for those who had made it, it was a joyful one as it was just the beginning of good things and the lime light.
Addressing the audience and the competitors, the Founder and Director of My Star Keabetswe 'Master Dee' Sisinyi who is also a judge admitted that this year there were a great number of talented contenders.
He told them that even though that was the case they chose the ones who will make it to the 'top 20' looking at toning and performance. He said that they wanted to see if an individual was able to tone up their voices or not and if they gave performance that would be appealing to the audience.
He said as it is their role to seek entertainers, they were not only looking for a great voice but someone who would be able to amuse the crowd. Amongst all the contenders, 33 made it through to the top 20 where the judges decided to make a special selection and chose seven more contenders to go through the competition.
During an interview with The Monitor, Master Dee said that the auditions were tough this year as many talented young people saw it fit to try their luck in the talent search show as they have acknowledged and realised its importance.
He said that this was made possible by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture who has made it possible for them to reach remote areas where young people have shown a great interest in the show. Master Dee said that even though it is their role as judges to chose talent, this year it was much harder than all the years which resulted in selecting 40 competitors which is nothing compared to a great number of talented people who took part in the auditions.
He acknowledged the contenders who came from rural areas as far as Kasane, Tsabong, Ghanzi, Bobonong, Gumare and others for their keenness to partake in the competition as some of them made it through to the competition. He promises My Star fan base that this year the competition will be tougher than other years as there is a great deal of talented people.
The top 40 will be launched in Gaborone on February 28th, 2014.
