New Phikwe Golf Club committee targets increased membership

Club captain, Shane Granger has told Mmegi Sport that they want to recruit at least 100 members by the end of the year. He said all committee members will be involved in the recruitment drive.

The new committee has David Keitshokile (president), Harold Van Zyl (chairman), Gasemathata Monnathebe (secretary), Tobokani Mosetlha (treasurer), Sam Lungu (member), Oganeditse Marata (member), Dinah Kesebonye (member), Fortune Manhanga (member) and Gabriel Tjitjo (member).

Granger said it is not going to be easy to recruit new members because people still treat golf as an elite sport. He said the committee is tasked with making sure that the people of Selebi-Phikwe understand the sport.

He said if people are not interested in golf, there is no way they will become members of the club.

The joining fee for a family is P50 plus P900 membership fee per annum. A single person pays P50 joining fee and P750 per annum. Juniors Under-18 years have pay P50 joining fee and P160 per annum. Granger said that they are in the process of revamping the clubhouse to make it user friendly. “Golf provides the opportunity for people to participate in a life time activity that promotes the physical, mental and emotional well being of an individual,” he explained.

He stated that they have structures in place for developing golfers of all ages staring from four years.

Granger said over the years, they have secured sponsorship from different companies such as Botswana Life, Syringa Spur, Rak Mining, Barclays Bank, Standard Bank, Stanbic Bank, First National Bank, AON and Dinesh Textiles. He said that the sponsorships have enabled the club to host successful tournaments.
