Police shoot robbery suspect

A source in the security forces say the quartet was driving a grey Volvo S40 towards Lobatse but failed to obey orders to stop from officers of the Serious Crime Squad.

The four were arrested after a chase in which they allegedly abandoned their car to escape on foot. During the arrest, one of the suspects was shot and injured by the security agents after he allegedly pulled a gun. It is said the injured suspect is 24 years-old and has been on the police wanted list.

Reports indicate that all the suspects are aged between 24 and 31 years. The injured suspect was admitted to Princess Marina Hospital under police guard while his mates are being held at Old Naledi Police Station. It is said the four were nabbed after police received a tip-off that suspects in the case in which Gaborone International School was robbed of about P500,000 at gun point were planning another hit in Lobatse.

Efforts to get answers from the police were not successful as the Old Naledi Station commander, Superintendent King Tshebo was on leave and referred queries to his deputy who said she was in a meeting and could only talk about the case after her officers who were in the field reported to her.

Police spokesman, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Mbulawa said he could not confirm or deny the reports of the arrest because it may interfere with investigations. He said he could only talk about the matter if it has come to court. The shooting comes weeks after state security agents shot and seriously injured Costa Kalafatis in Gaborone after linking him to a robbery.
