Jorowe said the culprit entered the house that the little girl and her siblings slept in and molested her. The incident was reported to the police by the child’s parents early hours of January 1, 2014.
“They said an unknown man entered the house the children slept in through the window and raped the little girl. When others screamed for help, he ran away. Up to this day we have not arrested anyone as it occurred at night and the house was dark. Our investigations are ongoing though,” said Jorowe. He said the girl was taken to the Kasane primary hospital for treatment and later sent for counselling.
“This is a shocking and sensitive matter and a strange thing to happen in this area. We do not have cases of rape in this area, “ he said.
Jorowe pleaded with parents to take extra care of their children especially girl children.
“Rape is a horrible thing as it affects a child emotionally and psychologically and can be a scar in her entire life. Parents should exercise extra care, “ he said. In another incident still in Kazungula, on January 2, a 55-year-old Zambian man was arrested and slapped with an unlawful stay charge.
Jorowe said the man was found hiding his 11 year-old daughter under the car seat and trying to cross with her to Zambia at Ferry border gate. He said that the man had a passport but the daughter allegedly did not.
“The Zambian man said he was working at Bosele Private School in Gaborone and was going to Zambia over the festive season, “ said Jorowe. He said that the man pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined P500, which he promptly paid. Jorowe said that after paying the money he was referred to the Department of Immigration for them to deal with the matter.
Meanwhile, Kazungula residents were praised for their cooperation and good conduct over the holidays. Jorowe said that they behaved well, respected liquor rules and regulations.
“Even tourists had a good time. We observed this during our patrols over the holidays and looking forward for this kind of positive behaviour in future, “ said Jorowe. He went on to warn visitors to be aware of wild animals in his area, as they can be dangerous to their lives.
“Members of the public should know that when travelling they shouldn’t stop for a view of wild animals while doing photo shooting as it is illegal. If they (visitors) want to do so, they should go to reserved places of tourism and have a safe and secure view of wild animals, “ he said.
