Speaking to Mmegi Sport, Matsapa refuted the demise of the Selebi-Phikwe team and expressed confidence it was headed for the first division.
“We played in the premier league and did not last. From there we dropped to the third division where we stayed for a season and got promoted to the second division where we are currently holding on tight,” Matsapa explained. He said the aim was to reach the play-offs and proceed to the fist division.
He said the team was relegated from the premier league because they used old players who could not keep up with the pace. He added that they were in the top-flight league and this was a huge hindrance.
He said Mosquito were currently comprised of students from Selibe-Phikwe junior and senior secondary schools. He punted some of his young, gifted players as middlefielders Nleli ‘Congo’ Scotch, Otsile ‘El-bashir’ Molaodi, Oratile ‘Viera’ Tom, defender Katlego Justice ‘Bongo’ Sebopi, and left-winger Katlego ‘Killer’ Misilo.
The youthful team is under the watchful eye of coach Boitumelo Motsamai, who has been with the side for close to four years. Matsapa did not dispute that the team was currently facing challenges but said things were moving in the right direction.
Matsapa said the club committee comprising of Lebogang Motshubi (chairperson), Paul Maharala (manager), McDonald Kgababa (secretary) and Seatweng Maharala (treasurer) as well as other dedicated supporters were committed to the survival of the team as provided funds from their own pockets. He added that they were currently engaged in sponsorship talks with a certain company based in Gaborone. “The company is owned by a young Motswana who grew up in Selebi-Phikwe and has been supporting Mosquito since childhood. The deal has not be finalised yet but hopefully by the second round it will be sealed,” said Matsapa He invited the business community and individuals to assist the team in any way. He called on former players to offer guidance and support to the young players.
“Currently we hold training sessions at Botshabelo Town Council ground near Motopi bar and I urge supporters to always show up to boost the boys’ morale,” added Matsapa
