No police escort, armed security for Lekganyane

Confirming this, commander of District No 3 in Gaborone Senior Superintendent Bonnie Bareki said unarmed police will be deployed at the National Stadium and the surrounding area to provide security to the public and protect property. “We were told that 1,000 buses were expected to arrive from different parts on Friday (today) with an estimated 300,000 to a million people,” said Bareki.  He said that since the people who would be gathered at the stadium were Christians he was hopeful that there would not be any incidents of hooliganism.

Bareki said they would mount a mobile police station at the National Stadium to provide any services that may be needed by those attending the event.

He said the GSS grounds, UB Stadium and UB main campus had been designated as car parkings to avoid congestion. He added that there was an area allocated for vendors as such they must not erect their stalls everywhere.

Gaborone City Council spokesperson Seeletso Lekgaba said the council was not involved in any way with the ZCC event except that the fire department would be alert to assist if needed.

“We are still not aware of the number of people who have applied for vendor licenses because the Sports Council has not yet communicated that information to us,” said Lekgaba.
