The Metrophones were impressive on Sunday night at President Hotel in Gaborone.

In the one and half hours performance the band kept the usually reserved crowd dancing. The show kick-started at 1900hrs with a performance of Music In The Air by the band’s three saxophonists, Akhutleleng Mogami, Tracy Bortsie, Lucas Moeng, drummer Wynton Senwelo and keyboardist Moemedi Tumagole.  Their song set the tone for the night.

Vocalists, Tumisang Mathiessen, Zuziwe Mavuma and Letlotlo Dikgang followed up with a performance of On And On. The song has many different cover versions but on the night the band performed a completely new one (version) they described as their ‘very own’. The next performance was of a song called Unbreakable by the lead singer of the group Mavuma who, to the delight of the crowd, was accompanied by Bortsie on the sax.

As compensation to the fans for the show’s late start, the band did special performances with four of the band members performing their own favorites.  Out of the four performances two seemed to excite the crowd more. It was Mavuma first with a rendition of Ixesha popularised by Lira, followed by the youngest member of the band Mathiessen who chose a performance of Whitney Houston’s Saving All My Love (For You).

Taking on a hit by a legendary singer such as Whitney Houston left the crowd wondering if Mathiessen would hit the high notes like Houston did. She hit the notes perfectly and to stamp its approval of her delivery the crowd sang along.

So impressive was Mathiessen’s performance that one member of the audience yelled that she should consider recording a solo album. The Metrophones will be performing at Westwood International School on November 9. The entrance fee for the show is P150. Tickets for the show are sold at Spar shops around Gaborone.
