Inquorate lawyers' meeting fails again

LSB failed to hold its AGM in December last year when it failed to form a quorum and deferred the meeting to last Saturday.

In an interview with Mmegi this week, LSB chairman Duma Boko said it was regrettable that another meeting had failed to form a quorum because lawyers did not turn up.

Last year, Boko attributed the failure of the meeting to the low turnout of lawyers from the Attorney Generals' Chambers.

'We have called another meeting to be held this coming weekend,' said Boko, adding that if lawyers fail to form a quorum again, this time the meeting will go ahead.

Boko said only 80 lawyers turned up last Saturday, short of 20 to form a quorum. He said the Attorney Generals' Chambers has about 230 lawyers at present, while there are 220 in private practice. About 42 lawyers are in the corporate sector.

A corporate lawyer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, blamed the current leadership of LSB for the failure of AGMs, saying it had suspended the Executive Secretary but failed to inform members and the general public.

He said members of the public were failing to get assistance ever since the suspension of the Executive Secretary, something Boko denies.

Makhoana was suspended in October last year following allegations of conflict of interest relating to procurement at LSB. A task force appointed to probe the allegations has reportedly submitted its findings to the LSB Council.

Meanwhile, the race for the chairmanship of LSB pits ruling party disciplinary committee member Isaac Seloko against Tebogo Sebego. Seloko is a former BLS vice-chairman while Sebego currently holds the post.
