Boerewors' welcome for BDP councillor at BCP

Tsetse says he was driven to resign from the BDP after he was harshly reprimanded by his fellow party members, allegedly for being in violation of the party's caucus rule during the election of the council chairman and deputy.

He departed from BDP tradition and voted for opposition councillors for both positions in the South East District Council.

'T decided to quit the BDP after I could not agree with the branch committee over numerous issues. The branch committee has made my life miserable. They have sabotaged me in many ways,' says Tsetse.

He said some of the issues he failed to agree on with the BDP branch committee date back to 2004 when he contested for the chairmanship of the youth committee.

'The youth asked me to stand. I did, but the branch committee pulled me down. The BDP branch committee in Ramotswa is made up of former councillors who lost during 'bulela ditswe'. They are hell bent on choosing leaders to represent the youth,' Tsetse said yesterday.

Tsetse tendered his letter of resignation yesterday. The BCP Ramotswa branch confirmed yesterday that the Mothubakwane Ward BDP councillor has joined the party. 'We have already issued him with a BCP membership card' said councillor, Kgabo Mabotseng.

The executive secretary of the BDP, Comma Serema, said yesterday that the party was not aware that Tsetse had resigned from the party since his resignation letter had not yet reached his office.

The new South East District council chairman is Tlokweng South's Botswana National Front councillor, Same Bathobakae, while BCP councillor, Tshekiso Sorinyane, of Ramotswa North Central is her deputy.

The crossing of the floor of a sitting BDP councillor in Ramotswa is a first in the constituency. Two BDP activists in the South East South constituency have also defected to the BCP. Tsetse's defection has brought the number of BCP councillors in the SEDC to six.

Councillor Tsetse was in the news late last year after he caused a scene at his sister-in-laws when he disrupted a bridal shower because he was not offered 'boerewors'.
