Botswana broken into 19 new sub-districts

Nine of the sub-districts are in the vast Central District.

The Ministry of Local Government says the new sub districts plus three new administrative authorities will be implemented in phases throughout the six-year life of NDP 10.

The principal planning officer in the ministry, Olebogeng Moipisi, says they will implement three sub-districts per financial year until the end of NDP 10.

'All of the 19 sub-districts have been approved and are now waiting to operationalise,' Moipisi says. 'We are going to implement them according to priority and availability of funds.'

The 19 new sub-district include nine in the Central District, three in the Kweneng District, three in the Southern District, two in the North West District, two in the Kgatleng District, and one each in the Kgalagadi, Gantsi, and South East Districts.

The Central District's new sub-districts will be headquartered in Lerala, Sefhare, Paje, Shoshong, Sebina, Nata, Rakops, Mmadinare and Mmaphashalala. The latter is being established partly in readiness for the forthcoming mining developments at the Mmamabule coalfields.

The Gantsi District, which has one sub-district, run from Charles Hill, will have another one in Ghantsi East whose centre will be New Xhade. The Kgalagadi District will have a new sub-district run from Tsabong in addition to the existing one in Hukuntsi.

In Kgatleng, Mochudi, the headquarters of the Kgatleng District will double as the centre of a new sub-district in addition to the existing one run from Mmathubudukwane .

Botswana's smallest district, the South East, will have another sub-district established in Ramotswa, the principal district capital. This will be in addition to the existing one run from Tlokweng.

There are currently 10 districts in the country with the latest one, the Chobe, having been established in the 07/08 financial year.
