After several BDP MPs refused to support the motion, Mmolotsi broke ranks and said he is for the amendment of Clause 6 (4) and (5) of the Statistics Bill that gives the Minister of Finance and Development Planning powers to appoint a nine-member board as well as its chairperson and vice-chairperson. Mmolotsi held the floor after several BDP MPs had rejected the amendment saying it is government business to see who is in the board and who chairs it. He stated that it is important to give such powers to a collective body rather than individuals who may appoint their cronies and family members to such powerful positions at the expense of those who possess the right qualifications. He said it has happened in the past when people would abuse their powers hence it is critical for Parliament to avoid such mistakes in future by coming up with clear legislation.
Kgatleng East MP Isaac Mabiletsa of the Botswana National Front (BNF), supported the motion and said laws should encourage collective bodies to run institutions rather than individuals. He did not take kindly to remarks by Education Minister, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, who said that the BDP is in power and should be left alone to do as it deems fit in running the affairs of the country.
The Vice President, Mompati Merafhe, called on MPs to inform themselves on public administration saying ministers should have an input in the appointments of people to senior positions. He said ministers account to the President hence they should have a hand in the appointment of people who account to them. Parliament was debating the amendments at the time of going to press.
