He joined Alfredo Mos and Africa Sounds and became the band's celebrity dancer and back-up singer with his stage antics and fashionable clothes.
Years later, very little was heard of the man and when he resurfaced he was now going by the name Dr Biza and released two albums, which were all flops. He disappeared again only to pop up as a member of Extra Melody, which is still to convince the masses that it has what it takes to compete in the crowded kwasa-kwasa arena. The band, which was formed more than five years ago, has not really captured any significant following yet.
Perhaps it was against this background that Mupulu decided to go solo again with the release of Ba Ipotsa Ka Nna and if early success is any yardstick, then his decision may turn out to be the best one.
'I have been in this country for 14 years now and I have seen it all having worked with the best like Alfredo and taking time with Extra Melody. This is my third album alone and unlike the other two, which failed to take me any further, I believe I have got things right this time around,' Mupulu said confidently.
He has always been a stylish dresser with his nice suits, gold chains and rings something which seemed to make him more popular with female fanatics. His years in stupor have not changed his personality and dress sense.
'A musician is someone people look up to and you always have to appear nice in public whether you are just walking around or on stage,' he said confidently.
In his new album's sleeve, Mupulu appears in a complete white suit with a black large collar shirt. 'I always have to make a fashion statement. I carefully selected the outfit for the sleeve because I wanted the fans to recognise me from the onset,' he said.
Of course many people have been asking themselves about Mupulu's whereabouts as the name of his album says. But the pompous musician believes his second coming will show his fans what he is really made of.
'People have always loved me even when I was not a front man and I know they have been asking themselves where their star was. All those questions have been answered. It is time for serious dancing and people will be happy this summer,' he boasted.
Hopefully his years of studying the industry from the background will help him lay a serious claim to stardom this time around.
'When I was not releasing it was not that I did not have the resources. It was just that I wanted to see how far other musicians have exploited the opportunities and how I could do it differently,' he said.
