A statement from the mine says the initiative is designed to assess electric vehicles under real-world site conditions and aligns directly with MMG Khoemacau’s commitment to decarbonisation, operational excellence and responsible growth. Officials said the trial supports MMG's Climate Strategy, which includes a commitment to carbon neutral operations by 2040.
They said electrifying mining equipment is one of the main ways Khoemacau can seek to reduce emissions at the source. By rigorously evaluating electric truck performance, reliability and maintenance requirements in local operating conditions, MMG Khoemacau aims to determine whether this technology can deliver operational and economic benefits, as well as reduced diesel use and emissions. Officials added that looking ahead, Khoemacau’s ambition extends beyond the trial. Depending on the trial results and site requirements, electric trucks could be introduced into haulage operations from 2028.
The mine is also mapping out the potential for electrifying additional fleets, including surface and underground equipment, loaders and other heavy machinery essential to efficient ore production. The infrastructure developed for this pilot will remain in place after the trial, supporting possible continued operation and broader EV adoption.
