The 55% jump in market capitalisation helped propel the BSE into the trillion-pula value territory as well as into the higher rankings on exchanges on the continent.
A market report compiled by the exchange and covering the period between January and end of September, indicates that values rose across the various instruments listed on the local bourse.
The successful listing of three ETFs contributed to a 107.3% increase in ETF market capitalisation from P37.7 billion to P78.1 billion.
The number of listed debt instruments increased from 120 to 136, driven by growth in government bonds and commercial paper issuances. The performance helped bond market capitalisation reach a record P46.7 billion, representing growth of 18.5% from P39.4 billion over the period. In terms of share prices, the DCI grew by two percent over the period, compared to 5.5 percent over the corresponding period last year, while the Foreign Companies Index rose by 45.7% compared to 0.4 percent.
Whilst the DCI slowed over the period, the Domestic Companies Total Return Index, which tracks both share price movements and dividend payments, rose by 5.2 percent outperforming the price-based DCI and highlighting the significant contribution of dividend distributions to overall shareholder returns.
Between January and September, Anglo American was the highest gainer on the Exchange, followed by PrimeTime, in a period in which just three counters lost ground in terms of share price.
The Exchange is expected to receive a significant boost in terms of market capitalisation and turnover when the Continental Re and Kwa Nokeng IPOs are settled and listed later this year.
