The baby was reportedly discovered by a man who was out exercising at a dumping site near the formerly popular Trekkers Night Club.

He allegedly heard a baby crying from the rubbish dump and went to investigate.

He was allegedly shocked to find the infant wrapped in a blanket amongst the litter and subsequently alerted the police, who attended the scene and rescued the baby.

Mogoditshane Police Station commander, Superintendent Moneedi Mhaladi, said police took the infant to Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital, where he is currently receiving care.

“The infant, a boy believed to be between two and three months old, was found wrapped in a blanket and in good condition.

We have launched a probe to locate his parents and establish who abandoned him amongst the litter,” Mhaladi said.

He appealed to parents who may find themselves unable to care for their children to seek safer alternatives rather than abandoning them in bushes, rubbish dumps, or other dangerous places.

Mhaladi further urged partners to support one another during pregnancy, saying children should be welcomed into safe and loving families.

The police are continuing with investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the baby’s abandonment and to trace his parents.
