The Green Mark, launched by the government’s investment promotion agency, provides businesses across sectors with an opportunity to showcase their sustainability efforts. It also aims to strengthen the competitiveness of these enterprises and position them to respond to growing global demand for responsible business practices. BITC CEO, Keletsositse Olebile, said the initiative represents a broader national commitment to building a sustainable economy.

“The Green Mark is more than an environmental recognition programme; it is a national commitment to building a more sustainable economy. “It reflects Botswana’s vision of creating businesses that are not only competitive and profitable but also environmentally responsible and future-focused,” he added. Olebile called on local businesses to adapt as global markets increasingly placed emphasis on sustainability. “As global markets continue to prioritise sustainability, Botswana must ensure that its businesses remain competitive by embracing responsible production, resource efficiency and sound environmental governance,” he said.

The Green Mark is an extension of the nationally recognised Pride Mark programme and is intended to encourage businesses to integrate sustainability into their operations. The programme will recognise organisations implementing practices that contribute to resource conservation, waste reduction, energy efficiency, environmental compliance and responsible corporate citizenship. BITC noted the Green Mark is also intended to promote continuous improvement in environmental performance across the business community while supporting Botswana’s economic diversification and climate resilience objectives. The initiative comes as environmental, social and governance considerations increasingly influence investment decisions, consumer preferences and access to international markets. According to BITC, the Green Mark will help position Botswana as a destination for sustainable investment by showcasing businesses that adhere to responsible environmental practices.

Following the launch, the Agency will roll out a national communications and stakeholder engagement campaign to raise awareness about sustainability and encourage businesses to participate in the programme.

The campaign will include media engagement, thought leadership articles, radio discussions, digital campaigns and stakeholder outreach. It will culminate in the inaugural Green Mark Recognition Ceremony, where businesses demonstrating outstanding commitment to environmental sustainability will be recognised. BITC said the recognition would seek to celebrate sustainability leadership, encourage continuous improvement and establish the Green Mark as a national symbol of sustainable business excellence.
