It was beautiful to see, feel and be a part of. Regardless of if you were intentionally trying to or not, the buzz was in the air, electric, you couldn't miss it.
Aous Tonto is a tailor and recently when I saw her for her birthday when I treated her to a Chellzkitchen Birthday breakfast she showed me some of the skirts she'd made in anticipation for independence purchase.
All the same khiba is always needed for different occasions. She's based in Ramotswa, but can deliver. Perfectly fitting and affordable.
I had bought Feye a cute dress and head band from the Main Mall, amazing ladies in front on StanChart. Feeling a bit of FOMO, I called Aous Tonto (I sometimes wish I could call her m'cusso like mom used to, I think it's so cool.
But she's not my m'cusso. Last minute and purchased 2 skirts, for myself and my lovely neighbour Jeanté.
I remember when they moved into the neighbourhood, we finally went to say hello and there was an instant connection. Our families are good friends and a great support system to each other.
It's really special forming a bond with your neighbours, it’s safe and builds a great community to live and raise our kids.
Shout out to all our neighbours though, I think we have a pretty nice neighbourhood. My Bible verse this morning, just so happened to be 'Love thy neighbour' Matthew 22:39.
For years my mom in love has said we should take the kids to the stadium for the Independence or President Day celebrations experience. This year I'm not going to lie, the Main Mall carnival thing and the stadium looked like a jump.
I think we need to plan well in time and make a day of it next year. Whatever celebration/holiday come first. The weather switched up as the big day grew closer, I think we're all used to pula on important days such as Independence Day.
It's very on brand for it to rain, to shower the nation in blessings. We didn't have any real plans, but I felt like we should get donned in Blue, Black and White and why not cook up a storm.
One of the other things about days like this is the food, the drinks the coming together and celebrating and sharing culture. I called up a good friend of ours, Mimi, and asked what they would be getting up to and if it wouldn't be a plan to potluck.
It's been a while since we saw each other and you know adult plans, sometimes we make them and they just keep shifting. We both jumped at this chance I think....a plan was hatched, Independence Day pot luck loading.
I would love to hear what you all had on your menus. I long said a few weeks ago I was making sure to brew and serve some ginger and Hinds Ginger Beer we did!
We also had Asian Pulled Pork, Fried Chicken like how Mma P used to make. She was such a pro with that chicken, I watched her frying it but never got the chance to ask about the ingredients or know how she knows the oil is hot enough and how long to fry the meat.
I sometimes feel like I'm not 100% confident and do an oven finish after. I'm in my head about this though....I need to remind myself that thing I always say that we have to cook with confidence. I wonder if she left behind any cook books, I should ask Koki, or if she's inherited any kitchen secrets she's willing to share.
There was Trotters, Spinach, Pap and an amazing dessert made by Atarah and Alani ....I got a Snowflake Creations Malva Pudding Kit and let them create some magic. Secret ingredient was a pinch of Hinds Ginger and Cinnamon.
I think my boys were just happy to chill and enjoy a good meal out. We ate, washed down ka gemere, dessert. To aid with digestion, was Kareoke with judging criteria being the singing and performance, so we had to move, shake and put on a show.
The Dintwes won by a small margin because they'd been practising all day. I am never ready for Kareoke I always clam up and don't know what to sing..but I'm ready, I watched Sing2 over 2.5 days (lol) with Shalo ....it's really good by the way, and got some inspiration. Ke ready for next round ya Kareoke.
You might have notice ke ganella mo Hinds Ginger.....and that's because it's a festive time. Go manyalo, Dezember is around the bend, and well gemere is a standard protocol.
We are therefore launching a new campaign for ginger lovers. Buy two boxes or more, create a beverage or dish. WhatsApp or share to the Chellzkitchen Facebook page and win a BIG Good combo weekly! Go out there and get you some Hinds Ginger
INGREDIENTS
For the Pudding: 1 packet (300g) Snowflake Malva Pudding Mix (included) 2 portions Smooth Rhodes Apricot Jam (included) 1 extra-large Egg 80 ml Cooking oil 200 ml Milk
For the Sauce: 1 packet Brown Sugar Mix (included) 50g Butter or baking margarine 250 ml (1 cup) Milk, cream, or evaporated milk
INSTRUCTIONS
Bake the Pudding
1. Preheat your oven to 180°C. Grease a 20 x 20 cm ovenproof glass dish or cake tin.
2. Whisk the wet ingredients: In a mixing bowl, beat the egg, cooking oil, milk, and the 2 jam portions together until thoroughly combined.
3. Add the mix: Pour in the 300g Malva Pudding Mix. Beat well with a whisk until the batter is completely smooth and free of lumps.
4. Bake: Pour the batter into your greased dish. Bake for about 20 -25 minutes until the top is cooked through and golden brown.
Prepare & Add the Sauce
1. Boil the sauce: While the pudding is baking, melt 50g of butter/margarine in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in your choice of milk/cream/evaporated milk and the brown sugar mix. Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
2. Combine: Immediately after taking the hot pudding out of the oven, pour the hot sauce evenly over the top.
3. Serve: Let it stand for a few minutes so the liquid completely seeps into the cake.
Serve warm, ideally alongside some Ultra Mel Custard
