Although some may regard him as a newcomer, he is the masculine voice of sibling trio that makes Baetsana Trio Music Group that is behind Merwalo. The group previously dropped O Itshoke in 2012 and I Do in 2016.
“I say Baetsana Trio for life,” he said, dismissing any suggestion that he has separated from the group. Born in Kopong and raised at Bokaa, his mother was a singer with Tlhape choir, while his father and uncles were also involved in music and entertainment. As a child, he imitated his father by creating makeshift sound systems and staging pretend performances with friends and siblings.
Peace Cop explained that his stage name reflects his commitment to peace and unity. Dikgang Di Mo Bathong incorporates Setswana, English, Kalanga, Shona and Afrikaans, which he said was intended to promote cultural interaction and broaden his audience.
The album tackles a wide range of societal and spiritual issues with Trumpet focusing on repentance and salvation, while the title track addresses rumours and unverified claims. The other song, Thanya Sione, pays tribute to victims of the 2024 Mmamatlakala bus tragedy, while Send Fire speaks against substance abuse. Other tracks address love, traditional marriage practices, faith and gender-based violence.
Peace Cop advised that talent should be nurtured and protected, particularly from substance abuse.
“Talent is an inborn thing and by mixing it with substances you kill its flair,” he noted.
He also urged government to invest more in the creative and performing arts, saying the sector could create employment opportunities, while encouraging young people to take pride in their culture. A University of Pretoria journalism graduate, Peace Cop highlighted that education did not extinguish his passion for music.
“Talent never gets old. It lives in one’s DNA till the grave,” he added.
Dikgang Di Mo Bathong is available on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube, amongst other platforms. His latest collaboration with Baetsana Trio, Merwalo, is a gospel offering infused with Afro-disco rhythms.
