The Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education has, however, issued an expression of interest inviting schools to participate in the 2027 school athletics competitions.

According to a savingram signed by the Ministry’s permanent secretary, Mmamiki Kamanakao, schools have been invited to submit expressions of interest to participate in the 2027 school athletics competitions, scheduled to take place between January and March.

“The competitions are part of our continued commitment to promoting school sport, physical fitness, talent identification, and holistic learner development. Athletics provides an important platform for learners to develop discipline, resilience, teamwork, confidence and a culture of excellence,” reads the correspondence.

“The 2027 competitions will bring together schools from different parts of the country to compete in a structured and professionally organised athletics programme, whilst providing an opportunity to identify emerging talent for further development and representation at higher levels of competitions,” Kamanakao said in the letter.

Speaking to MmegiSport, Child Welfare and Basic Education assistant minister, Justin Hunyepa said the call for expressions of interest does not change the situation, as negotiations over the resumption of school sport are still ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Ministry’s decision has been condemned by the Botswana Teachers Union (BTU) and Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU).
