As the DG of such a controversy-ridden institution, you really played your part in the fight against corruption and economic crime. Your stay at the helm of the DCEC was quickly paying dividends under your stewardship. During your tenure, there was a lot of action as those caught on the wrong side of the law were brought to court regardless of their economic or political status. We have learnt of reports that the DCEC has previously been choosing to hold onto some cases without passing them to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) as a way of protecting certain persons involved.

For the longest time, the DCEC was considered ‘toothless’ and targeting the so-called small fish, but the complexion of the fight against corruption and economic crime has been fast changing under your tenure. Through the change, we have seen former and sitting Cabinet members being dragged before court to answer for their actions whilst in office. This has gone on to the extent that, we saw a Cabinet member under President Duma Boko’s government resigning from office to deal with allegations of corruption he is facing. We also saw former Cabinet ministers being dragged before court to answer to charges of corruption. We say kudos to you and the team you led in your endeavours to fight crime. We also hope that whoever fills your shoes should continue where you left and carry on the aggressive fight against corruption and economic crime. Protecting wrongdoers should never be condoned as the country seems to have lost a lot through corruption and other related crimes.

We only hope that Makgekgenene has left the office not because she has rubbed the powers that be the wrong way, but rather because hers is a genuine exit.

Meanwhile, we have also noticed that under Makgekgenene’s tenure, there were fewer cases of turf wars between the DCEC and its sister security organ, Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) which were common before she took over as DCEC head honcho. It seems the courts of law have settled the differences by reminding the DIS to stay away from the activities of the DCEC as it does not even supervise the corruption busting agency.

The only lingering worry about the Makgekgenene departure is that she had promised to get to the bottom of a case involving the DIS Director-General, Peter Magosi. Whether this case will ever materialise after her departure is another matter. During her appearance before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Makgekgenene had confirmed that her team were investigating a case against Magosi.

We wish the DCEC to set its eyes on the proverbial ball and deliver the desired results than serving the interests of the Executive.
