No.13 District Traffic Officer, Superintendent Obonetse Matshego, said police were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

He highlighted the crash ocurred near traffic lights that were functioning at the time.

“We do not know if one of the drivers failed to obey the traffic lights or if one of the drivers was attempting to overtake a vehicle in front, resulting in a head-on collision.

“Investigations into what caused the accident are ongoing,” he said.

Matshego added the five-year-old girl sustained serious injuries and was certified dead by doctors upon arrival at Princess Marina Hospital.

He said the BMW had four occupants, being the driver, the deceased child and two other passengers, who sustained minor injuries.

The two passengers, together with the BMW driver, were treated and released from hospital the same night.

Matshego said the VW Golf driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, also sustained minor injuries and was treated and released on the same night.
