The incident happened along the Palapye–Martins’ Drift road on Saturday morning, police said. Palapye Police Station Commander, Superintendent Koziba Phuluweni, said the fatal crash occurred at around 11am.
He revealed that preliminary investigations indicate that the BMW was attempting to overtake a horse-and-trailer truck when it collided head-on with another oncoming horse-and-trailer truck.
“The BMW had three people on board. Two women died, whilst the male passenger sustained serious injuries,” Phuluweni said when confirming the accident.
“He suffered a fractured left arm and head injuries and is currently hospitalised at Mahalapye (District) Hospital.”
According to the station head, the oncoming horse-and-trailer truck was travelling from Martins’ Drift towards Palapye, driven by a 45-year-old Zimbabwean man.
The truck driver, who was travelling alone, escaped the accident uninjured. Phuluweni stated that they suspect that the BMW driver may have, amongst other things, miscalculated the speed of the oncoming truck.
“We suspect that since she was attempting to overtake, she did not clear the road before overtaking, or she might have miscalculated the oncoming truck’s speed,” he explained.
Phuluweni added that the two deceased women were relatives and residents of Lecheng.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.
