The fatal accident occurred on Saturday at around 7:55pm when the deceased, who was driving the Nissan Note, reportedly attempted to overtake another vehicle.

His vehicle subsequently collided head-on with an oncoming Mercedes-Benz.

Confirming the accident, No.13 District Traffic Officer, Superintendent Obonetse Matshego, stated that the Nissan Note driver died on the spot.

“The Mercedes-Benz driver escaped with minor injuries. He was treated and released from hospital the same evening,” he said.

Following the fatal crash, Matshego has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads, particularly when overtaking.

He warned that reckless manoeuvring on the roads can have fatal consequences.

“It is a great concern that most drivers appear to forget the responsibility they have when they are behind the wheel.

“Some overtake recklessly, whilst others continue to overspeed even when road signs are clearly visible, warning them to slow down,” he said.

He added that many road accidents, including those that claim lives, could be prevented if motorists changed their attitudes towards road safety and took greater responsibility whilst using the roads.

“Most accidents, even those that claim lives, could be avoided if drivers changed their attitude on the road, understood that they share the road with other road users and took responsibility at all times,” Matshego said.

He further expressed concern that road accidents continue to claim lives despite ongoing efforts by police.

Matshego said the responsibility ultimately lies with motorists to change their behaviour and exercise greater caution on the roads.

“Despite our efforts to sensitise road users about road safety, we continue to lose lives every weekend.

“It is important for motorists to change their attitude and understand that their actions on the road can have serious consequences,” he said.
